Hillsborough River Paddle Trip July 2024

A Beautiful Day day in the wilds of the Hillsborough River.  It was a hot day but there was a lot of shade on the river and the river was cool to splash yourself with.  The Hillsborough river never disappoints its a wild river with no houses only a couple boardwalks at the the parks, other wise we had the river too ourselves.  There was only maybe 3 other kayaks on the river all day.  So it was just us with Nature.  The river is lined with large bald Cypress Trees, and the river banks are filled with their knees, the Cypress trees upward facing roots. And filling the branches of the trees is the grey Spanish moss that hangs down like an old mans beard.  Quite a few mid sized alligators lurched around the edges of the river watching us pass.  Many of the dead tree trunks had white mushrooms of various shapes growing off of them. These same logs often gave a respite to the turtles to rest and sun themselves.  Couldn’t find the location of the mounds of flint along the river. And Kenny didn’t paddle with us today to point it out.  But we did see Kenny at the end of the trip watching us go by.  Kenny told me the area was overgrown and hard to see the mounds. It was a long paddle trip on a hot day, but it was still a great day on the water in a wonderful natural river.  Thanks everyone for coming out and experiencing the river with us.  See you next month on the Withlacoochee River.
