What a Kill Switch Key Is Actually For

The lanyard clips to you. If you go over the side, the lanyard pulls the key out and the motor shuts down instead of continuing without you.

That is the whole point, and it is not a formality. A motorised kayak that keeps going after you fall out is a boat you cannot catch and a propeller you do not want to be in the water with.

Wear the lanyard. A kill switch key left permanently in the boat with the lanyard coiled beside it is doing nothing at all.
