When the strap actually has to hold something, this is the one. 1 inch nylon webbing is stronger and far more abrasion-resistant than the polypropylene on the next roll, and for load-bearing jobs that difference is the whole point.

Nylon Webbing Against Polypro

Nylon is the stronger fibre and it takes abrasion much better — it will survive being dragged over a gunwale, a roof rail or a rock in a way polypro will not. It also stretches under load, which sounds like a fault and is actually a feature: that stretch absorbs shock instead of transmitting it into whatever the strap is attached to.

The costs are real though. Nylon absorbs water, so a wet strap is heavier, slower to dry, and slightly weaker than a dry one. And it sinks. If the strap is going to spend its life wet and might go overboard, polypro is the better answer; if it is carrying weight, this is.

Where 1 Inch Nylon Webbing Belongs

Seat straps and backband straps. Cargo lashings that actually restrain something. Handles and grab loops. Anchor trolley runs. Anything that gets stood on, sat on, or dragged.

It is also the width to match most existing kayak hardware — 1" is what the majority of buckles, tri-glides and ladderlocks on the market are cut for.

Looking After It

Rinse salt out. Salt crystals inside a weave act like grit and slowly abrade the fibres from within, which is why a strap that lives in salt water and never gets rinsed goes fuzzy long before its time.

Seal every cut end with a lighter and press it flat. And check any strap that holds a boat to a vehicle before every trip, whatever it is made of — that is the one failure with real consequences.
