The nylon touring skirt, and for most people paddling around Clearwater it is the right one. The Coastal Tour sprayskirt is rated by Seals for moderate conditions — sea kayak touring, wind and chop — and it is far cooler to wear than neoprene.

The Coastal Tour Sprayskirt Is Nylon, Not Neoprene

Midweight coated nylon packcloth with a polyurethane coating, and ballistic nylon wear guards stitched along the outer edge where your paddle shaft rubs. That edge is where cheap skirts die.

Nylon sheds spray and rain and keeps you dry on a tour. What it will not do is survive a breaking wave or a hole — that is what the neoprene skirts are for. Be honest with yourself about where you paddle, and buy the one that matches.

Only One Size to Get Right

This is the practical advantage of nylon. The tunnel is an adjustable nylon and neoprene waist that fits a chest up to 44", so there is no tunnel size to choose. You only need the deck size.

Deck sizes run 1.2 through 2.5. Those are Seals' own pattern numbers, not measurements — you cannot work yours out with a tape measure. Tell us your kayak's make and model and we will look it up against Seals' own chart.

The Coastal Tour Sprayskirt Deck Stay

A tensioned deck stay holds the deck domed rather than flat. Water then runs off the sides instead of pooling in your lap, which is the difference between a dry two-hour paddle and a wet one.

Also on it: a zippered mesh deck pocket, an adjustable neoprene chestband with removable suspenders, four lash loops, and sealed double-stitched seams. Made in the USA.

Entry and Exit

The Coastal Tour uses a front webbing grab loop with a padded handle. Keep it out on the deck, and practise the release in shallow water with a partner before you rely on it.
