A quarter turn deck plate is the simplest reliable way to get a sealed opening into a kayak hull. Line up the lugs, drop it in, twist a quarter turn, and it locks. No threads to cross, no lever to snap.

The Internal Collar Is the Important Bit

This version has an internal collar — a sleeve that hangs down inside the hull below the opening. Two things follow from that. It stiffens the rim so the plate does not distort when the hull flexes, and it is what a deck plate bag hangs from, turning the opening into a usable dry storage pocket rather than just a hole with a lid.

If you want to add a bag later, you need a collar. Plates without one cannot take a bag at all, so this is the version to buy if there is any chance you will want storage.

Quarter Turn Deck Plate Sizes and the Hole You Cut

• Opening: 6-1/2"

• Outside diameter: 8-1/8"

• Deck cut-out: 6-1/2"

• Depth below deck: 7-3/8"

• UV-resistant injection-moulded ABS, black, smooth finish

• Six #8 flat-head fasteners, sold separately

That 7-3/8" depth matters more than people expect. Before you cut, check there is that much clear space below the deck at the spot you have chosen — a bulkhead, a seat hanger or a footbrace rail in the way turns an easy job into a bad afternoon.

Fitting One

Mark and cut the 6-1/2" hole with a jigsaw and a fine blade, going slowly so the plastic does not melt closed behind the cut. Dry-fit, drill the six screw holes, then bed the flange in marine sealant before you screw it down. Bonded sealing washers under the screw heads stop water tracking down the threads — we stock those too.
