Sorrento 126

The Old Town Sorrento 126 is the boat for someone who has outgrown a ten-foot rec kayak and wants to actually get somewhere. Twelve foot six with a drop skeg, which is the combination that turns a pleasant paddle into a trip.

The Skeg Is the Point

A skeg is a fin you drop out of the hull when the wind picks up. Without one, a short boat weathercocks — the bow swings into the wind and you spend the day correcting. Drop the skeg and it holds a line, so the paddling goes into forward rather than into steering. Every Sorrento has one; there is no version without it.

Rotomolded, and What That Buys You

This is a rotomolded polyethylene boat: plastic powder melted and spun inside a heated mould. It is heavier than the thermoformed Eddyline and Hurricane boats we also sell, and not as stiff — but it takes abuse that would crack them. Drag it up a concrete ramp, bump it off an oyster bar, drop it off the roof rack, and it dents rather than breaks. In Florida sun it wants a cover or some shade, because polyethylene is what UV goes after first.
