Kohana 4 Tent

The Kohana 4 is a four-person car camping tent — heavier and roomier than anything you would backpack with, and far quicker to put up.

What Makes It a Car Camping Tent

Weight is not the design constraint. Space, headroom and an easy pitch are. That means thicker poles, a bigger footprint and a fabric weight that will take being pitched on gravel without a groundsheet fuss.

If you are driving to the site, none of that costs you anything. If you are carrying it, it costs you plenty — this is not a backpacking tent and we would not sell it as one.

Pitching It

Colour-coded poles and clips rather than sleeves, which is the difference between a ten-minute pitch and a thirty-minute argument in the dark.

Pitch it once in the yard before the trip. Every tent has one step that is obvious only the second time.

Florida Notes

Guy it out even on a calm evening — afternoon storms here arrive faster than you will get your shoes on. And run the fly fully staked rather than draped; a fly touching the inner will wick water straight through.

In sand, swap the supplied pegs for sand stakes.

Pricing Note for This Car Camping Tent

Eureka's published MSRP on the Kohana 4 was $249.95. Our ticket reads $264.99. We have flagged that internally — ask us at the counter and we will sort it out with you rather than argue about a sticker.

About Eureka!

Johnson Outdoors closed Eureka's camping division on 30 October 2024. The brand still exists for commercial and military shelters, but consumer tents and stoves are finished — no new production, no new models.

That is worth knowing before you buy. Warranty and spare-part support on a closed line is not something we can promise on the maker's behalf, so we will not. What we can tell you is what is in the box, and that when this one is gone we cannot order another.
