Backband Large -Seals
A kayak backband is the single best comfort upgrade for a sit-inside kayak, and the one most people put off longest. It supports your lower back where a tall seat back just gets in the way.
Why a Kayak Backband and Not a Backrest
A high seat back sounds more supportive and is usually worse. It fouls the coaming when you lean back, it fights your life jacket, and it stops you rotating your torso — which is where paddling power actually comes from.
A backband sits low, at the lumbar curve, and supports the part of your back that fatigues. Your shoulders stay free to rotate. Every touring and sea kayak worth having is outfitted this way.
If you have been getting a sore lower back after an hour, this is almost certainly the fix.
Fitting a Kayak Backband
Contoured, neoprene-covered, with an accessory lash strap and multiple mounting options, so it fits most sit-inside kayaks as an upgrade or a straight replacement for a tired original.
Set it so the band supports the small of your back, not your shoulder blades — lower than feels right at first. Then paddle a short trip and adjust again; almost everybody ends up lowering it.
A Note on This One
Seals now list a single kayak backband in their range, where they previously offered a Small and a Large. Ours are Large, and we have five on the shelf — so this is legacy stock of the bigger size.
That is good news if you are a larger paddler or have a roomy touring cockpit, which is exactly who the Large was for. We would rather tell you it is not the current catalogue item than let you find out later.
