Kayaking Seminole Waterfront Park to Archie Island: A Dolphin Show and Sunny Paddle from Seminole

What do you get when you combine a fine bright day, a scenic bayou, a peaceful island, and incredible wildlife? A truly unforgettable kayaking trip! We launched to go kayaking from Seminole Waterfront Park for an adventure down Cross Bayou to the lovely Archie Island. We knew it would be beautiful, but we had no idea just how spectacular it would become, especially with the wildlife encounters we had in store.

The Journey Out: Headwinds, Mangroves, and Early Sightings Setting off kayaking from Seminole Waterfront Park, we pointed our kayaks down Cross Bayou. We immediately felt a headwind – a bit of a challenge, but nothing we couldn’t handle! Paddling against the breeze gave us a good rhythm as we made our way towards the island.

The scenery on this stretch of the bayou is classic Florida. We glided past lush mangroves, their complex root systems creating intricate tunnels and shelters for marine life. We also paddled directly under the iconic Pinellas Trail bridge, getting a unique perspective from the water. All along the way, we kept a careful eye out for those hidden oyster bars lurking just below the surface!

While the dolphins were the main event later, the journey out wasn’t without its own wildlife sightings. We watched osprey perched high or soaring overhead, ever on the hunt. Pelicans, in their characteristic V-formations or floating on the water, were a constant presence. And we were fascinated to see stingrays swimming relatively close to the surface, their distinctive shapes visible just below the water or even their fins briefly flapping above.

Archie Island: Relaxation and a Spectacular Dolphin Show! After working against the wind, arriving at Archie Island felt like reaching an oasis. This small island provides a perfect natural stopping point for paddlers. We landed our kayaks and found a comfortable spot to take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. We unpacked our lunch and settled in for some much-needed relaxation.

The bayou delivered something truly magical! As we arrived at Archie Island, a pod of dolphins appeared relatively close to the island. What started as simple fin sightings quickly turned into an absolutely spectacular show! They began jumping out of the water, playing and splashing right in front of us. It was a breathtaking, front-row seat to nature’s acrobatics – a moment we won’t soon forget and the highlight of our trip!

The Return Trip: A Smooth Glide Home Fully relaxed and still buzzing from the dolphin show, we pushed off from Archie Island for the paddle back to Seminole Waterfront Park. The headwind that challenged us on the way out had become our best friend! The wind was now at our backs, making the return journey incredibly smooth and effortless. We simply glided along, retracing our path and enjoying the views from a different perspective, feeling grateful for the ease of the ride home.
