A deck line guide is the low, smooth fitting that perimeter line runs through on its way down the side of a kayak. Its whole job is to keep the line lying flat against the hull instead of standing proud where it can snag.

Deck Line Guide, Small or Large

We stock both sizes and the difference is modest but real. The large is about 3/16" longer and a little wider; the height is the same on both at around 1/2", so neither sits higher off the deck than the other.

Pick the small when the line is thinner or the run is tight against a curve, and the large when you are running a heavier perimeter line or want more bearing surface so the line does not wear a groove.

Both use a single #10 oval-head fastener, so swapping between them later is trivial.

Why It Matters on a Sea Kayak

Perimeter deck line is a rescue feature. It is what a swimmer grabs, what a rescuer grabs, and what you grab when you are re-entering. If it is loose enough to get a hand under but flat enough not to catch, it is doing its job. Guides keep it in that state.

The other half of the job is preventing chafe. Line that crosses a hard deck edge without a guide saws through the gelcoat or the plastic on one side and abrades itself on the other.

Fitting It

Bed it in marine sealant and use a #10 machine screw through a well nut on a plastic hull; a self-tapper will loosen over a season or two as the polyethylene creeps. If the old hole has elongated, shift the fitting rather than reusing it.
