Deck Line Guide -Large
The bigger of the two guides we stock. A large deck line guide gives perimeter line a longer, wider bearing surface to run over, which matters when the line is heavy or the run takes a hard turn.
When to Choose the Large Deck Line Guide
Three situations. A thicker perimeter line, where the small guide's slot is a tight fit. A run that changes direction sharply, where the line presses hard against one side of the guide. And any position that sees a lot of hand-loading — near the cockpit, where people actually grab the line in a rescue.
More bearing surface means less pressure concentrated on one spot, which means the line wears more slowly and does not develop a groove at a single point.
What You Are Not Giving Up
Height. The large deck line guide is about 3/16" longer and slightly wider than the small, but both sit about 1/2" high, so going up a size does not leave you with something that catches a paddle or a hand. It also takes the same single #10 oval-head fastener, so you can change your mind later without drilling anything new.
Perimeter Line Is Safety Equipment
Worth remembering why any of this exists. Deck line down the side of a sea kayak is what a swimmer holds onto, what a rescuer grabs to stabilise a boat, and what you use to re-enter. It wants to be tight enough to lie flat, loose enough to get a gloved hand under, and continuous from bow to stern. Guides are what keep it in that condition instead of sagging into the water or standing up to snag.
Fitting
Bed it in marine sealant. On a plastic hull use a #10 machine screw through a well nut rather than a self-tapper — the well nut seals the hole and does not work loose as the polyethylene creeps.
