Chassahowitzka River Kayak Adventure – Manatees, Springs & A Scenic Paddle! 🛶
The Chassahowitzka River, known as “The Chaz,” is one of Florida’s most breathtaking paddling destinations. This past weekend, we set out on an unforgettable kayaking adventure, exploring crystal-clear springs, spotting manatees, and enjoying a peaceful lunch at one of Florida’s hidden gems.
A Perfect Day for Kayaking the Chassahowitzka River
The day greeted us with a cool and overcast sky, creating the perfect conditions for a comfortable paddle. After a stretch of chilly weather, the Gulf’s colder waters brought an abundance of manatees into the springs, making for some incredible wildlife encounters.
We launched our kayaks and made our way toward Seven Sisters Springs, one of the river’s most famous spots. With its pristine blue waters, underwater caves, and thriving marine life, this area never fails to impress. We took a few moments to soak in the beauty, watch fish and turtles glide beneath our kayaks, and appreciate the peaceful surroundings before continuing our journey.
Navigating Low Tide – A True Kayaking Adventure
After exploring Seven Sisters, we paddled downriver, but the tide was extremely low—a reminder that nature always plays a role in our adventures! In several spots, the water was too shallow to paddle, so we had to hop out and drag our kayaks across the sandbars. While it added an extra challenge, it was all part of the experience, and everyone handled it with a great sense of adventure.
One of the most anticipated stops of the trip was The Crack, a secluded spring nestled deep in the Chassahowitzka wilderness. However, the creek leading to The Crack was also very shallow, causing a bit of a bottleneck as kayakers navigated their way through. Even with the low water levels, this hidden oasis was worth the effort.
Lunch at The Crack – A Hidden Gem in Florida
Upon reaching The Crack, we took a well-earned break and enjoyed lunch in one of the most serene spots on the river. The water, though lower than usual, still had its signature emerald-green glow, and the surrounding cypress trees and lush vegetation made for an incredible backdrop. Sitting beside the clear spring, taking in the quiet beauty of the area, reminded us why kayaking in Florida is such a special experience.
After refueling, we began the journey back, paddling through winding waterways, passing overhanging trees, and spotting more wildlife along the way. The combination of adventure, wildlife encounters, and stunning landscapesmade this trip another memorable one on the Chassahowitzka River.
