The Astral E-Ronny is a light, uncomplicated jacket with Astral's Thin-Vent back — the one to look at if the fuller-featured models feel like more jacket than you want. At 1.02 lb it is noticeably lighter than most of what sits next to it on the rack.

Astral Has Retired the Astral E-Ronny

We would rather tell you than let you find out. Astral has discontinued this model and it is gone from their catalogue; what is on our rack is what is left. If you want the current equivalent it is the Lonnie, which we also stock. If you want a light jacket at a good price and your size is here, this is a fine buy — a discontinued model is not a defective one.

What the Astral E-Ronny Is

A US Coast Guard Type III with 16 lb of design buoyancy, which is the ordinary and correct rating for an adult paddling jacket. It is a flotation aid for a conscious paddler in protected water with help close by — not an offshore vest, and not something that will turn an unconscious person face-up.

The back is Astral's Thin-Vent panel with a mesh liner, so it sits clear of a tall kayak seat back rather than wedging against it. Four adjustment points, two at the sides and two at the shoulders, and a full-length YKK Vislon zip with self-locking teeth. There is a lash tab on the front right shoulder for a knife or a light. The cut leaves plenty of shoulder room, which makes it a reasonable choice for stand-up paddling as well as sitting in a boat.

Chest measurement, not shirt size — measure the widest part of your chest.

• S/M — 31" to 37"

• M/L — 38" to 44"

• L/XL — 45" to 51"

Come try it. Zip it, snug it from the waist up, and have someone pull hard straight up on the shoulder straps. It should not slide toward your ears.
